American Family Insurance began its history as Farmers Mutual Automobile Insurance Company in 1927 as an insurer for Wisconsin farmers. Within seven years, it was selling policies to non-farmers also. The company’s market eventually grew to include more than only rural areas. The name changed to American Family Mutual Insurance Company in 1963. Currently the insurer sells policies in 19 states from Ohio to Washington. It is currently headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin but has regional offices throughout the states that it does business in. It is a private mutual company and a Fortune 500 company. As of May 2011, it has an “A” (excellent) rating by the A.M. Best Company, the leading independent insurance industry analyst.
American Family’s policies are sold through about 4,000 exclusive agents. If offers auto, home, life, business, umbrella, farm and ranch, business, health and retirement insurance products. On its automobile policies, the company offers many premium discounts including multi-vehicle and multi-policy discounts, good driver and good student discounts, airbag discounts and others. Premium payments may be made through an agent, over the telephone or online. The company does have a very informative, user friendly website.
Claims may be reported through the agent or a 24/7 claims hotline, or over the internet via the American Family's user-friendly website (which is also bilingual in Spanish). It is promised that an adjuster will respond within one business day. Customers needing vehicle repair can use American Family’s Customer Repair Program (CRP), which offers pre-qualified auto repair shop. They also partner with Safelite to handle glass-only claims.
American Family has partnered with the NFL’s Green Bay Packers to support breast cancer research. It was also the lead donor for the American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin, which opened in 2007. American Family, its employees and agents donated over ten million dollars to the hospital.
American Family earned J.D. Power and Associates 2011 Insurance Shopping Study purchase experience index. The recognition was based on three factors: policy offerings, distribution channel and price.
