The Auto-Owners Insurance Company

Auto-Owners Insurance was founded in 1916 by Vern V. Moulton in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. He started the company with no capital, but it quickly grew. The next year, Moulton moved the company to Lansing, Michigan. It is currently headquartered in Verndale, just outside of Lansing. The company was able to weather the Great Depression and even enjoy growth through that period. In its early years, the company only sold automobile insurance in the state of Michigan, but in 1935 it expanded into neighboring Indiana and Ohio, and then expanded even more in the 1940s.

The company continues to expand and currently sells insurance policies in twenty-six states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Dakota, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Wisconsin and Virginia.

Auto-Owners began by selling only automobile insurance, but it joined the general casualty insurance field in 1940. In spite of retaining the original name, which leads one to suspect that only automobile insurance policies are available, Auto-Owners sells multiple lines of insurance to include farm, life, property, liability, garage and workers compensation.

The company’s automobile insurance offerings include the usual coverages, with just a few out-of-the ordinary options, including Pet Medical, which we do not see very often at all. Here is a complete listing of their available coverage as well as discount options. Please remember that not all coverages are available in every state that Auto-Owners Insurance conducts business in.
