The Capital Insurance Group

The Capital Insurance Group (CIG) has been insuring a handful of western states since it was founded over a century ago in1898. It offers insurance policies in Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington State. Automobile policies are available only in California, Nevada and Oregon. The group consists of a few affiliate companies: California Capital, Eagle West, Nevada Capital and Monterey Insurance Companies, of which California Capital is the largest. CIG is a privately held, employee owned company that does not answer to shareholders.

CIG offers a limited range of insurance products and sticks only with insurance; it does not offer annuities or retirement products. Their automobile coverage is available to safe drivers only, allowing them to reduce prices because of lower risks. They will insure most vehicles up to $125,000, which can include high performance sports cars, classics and antique automobiles. CIG boasts that it is one of the few insurers that will pay for brand name replacement parts in a covered repair (official website). (Actually, most insurers will pay for brand name replacement parts if you insist.) Like most other insurers, CIG will also waive the deductible for windshield repair vs. replacement.

In additional to the traditional automobile insurance policy, CIG also offers a very nice emergency services coverage to help their customers deal with comparatively minor emergencies; getting locked out of your car, flat tire, needing a jump start or tow, running out of gas, oil or water or other minor mechanical emergencies.

CIG was named to the exclusive Ward’s Top 50 Performing Insurance Companies in the U.S. in 2010; the sixth time in the past decade. Over 3,000 U.S. insurers were analyzed by Ward in this informal competition. The Capital Insurance Group also enjoys an A (Excellent) rating by A.M. Best, the leading independent insurance industry auditor; the rating measurers an insurer’s financial soundness, including its ability to pay pending claims.

Whether you are an investor, or shopping around for an automobile insurance policy, this seems to be a company to keep your eye on.
