The Erie Insurance Group
The Erie Insurance Group was founded in Erie, PA, in 1925, with the following purpose: “To provide our Policyholders with as near perfect protection, as near perfect service as is humanly possible and to do so at the lowest possible cost.” The company was started by H.O. Hirt and O. G. Crawford as an insurance exchange. Originally limited to automobile insurance in the state of Pennsylvania, it has since expanded into eleven states (Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin) and the District of Columbia, and branched out to offer coverage for life, home, personal property and business. Erie is a member of the Fortune 500, and is ranked A+ (superior) for property/casualty insurance and A (excellent) for life insurance by A.M. Best Company, the leading independent insurance agency rating service.
Erie’s policies are sold by a network of more than 9000 independent agents based in 2000+ agencies across the states in which the company operates. In addition to contacting a local agent directly, you may request a quote online, and once the quote is finalized, the site will assist you in obtaining the policy from an agent. For those who prefer to get information over the phone, a toll-free number is offered.
Erie offers an extensive list of discounts for coverage, including safe driver, multi car, over age 55, passive restraints, anti-theft and others. In addition, they offer a new wrinkle on traditional accident forgiveness options, called “Rate-Lock”. With this program, the rate for your coverage is locked in for as long as your policies remain in force, unless you add a new driver or new vehicle, or change your address. Additional information on this program is available at www.dontpunishme.com.
The Erie Insurance Group has a long tradition of giving back to the community, extending back to the War Orphans Fund in the 1940’s, continuing through sponsorship of youth sports teams and volunteering to support the local Public Broadcasting Service stations, and contributing to the United Way. In 2009, the H.O. Hirt family was awarded the Edward C. Doll Award for community service by the Erie Community Association. Erie created “Lookin’ Out”, a safe-driving program targeted towards teens that has contributed more than a half million dollars to qualifying high schools to promote safe driving habits, and partners with the American Red Cross as part of the Serving Together Volunteer Network.
Erie’s website serves as a portal to a wealth of information on the company and the various policies and coverage options it offers. In addition to simply reading information, the site allows you to view slide shows and videos that illustrate success stories and provide examples of customer service. You may also obtain quotes for coverage, locate a local agent, or request a call back online if you would like. If you are already a policy-holder with Erie, you may file a claim, pay your bill or update your account information via the site as well.
The primary distinguishing characteristic that Erie uses to differentiate itself from the competition is customer service. Erie is a recipient of the 2011 J.D. Power and Associates Customer Service Champion award, one of only approximately 40 companies across the US that has this honor. Their site displays numerous testimonials from policy-holders describing the excellent customer service they have received, and enables visitors to share their own story as well. H.O. Hirt, the company’s founder, coined the phrase “Above All in Service”, which remains the Erie Insurance Group’s promise to its customers to this day.
