Nationwide Insurance: 85 Plus Years and Still Going Strong

Nationwide Insurance (officially the Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company) opened its doors in 1925 as the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation with the goal of providing inexpensive quality automobile insurance for Ohio farmers. Within a few years it began spreading into other states and the District of Columbia. The company changed its name to Nationwide Insurance in 1955. It is currently headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. As of December 2010, Nationwide enjoys “A+” (Excellent) ratings from both A.M. Best, the insurance industry’s leading independent assessor, and from S&P. It also enjoys an A1 rating from Moody’s.

Nationwide’s insurance offerings include: auto, motorcycle, renters, homeowners, life and other specialty policies such as watercraft, plus a range of business and commercial policies. Nationwide also offers a wide range of banking and investment services.

Nationwide currently offers what they call a “vanishing deductible”, meaning that for just signing up for the coverage, $100 is knocked off the deductible, and then every year of claim-free safe driving lowers the deductible by another $100.00. This is a great value to good drivers, and one of our website favorites. They also offer accident forgiveness plans, multiple-auto and multiple-policy discounts.

In the event of an accident or loss, Nationwide allows policy holders to report claims on-line 24/7, by fax or through their agent. Nationwide also offers a mobile app for the iPhone and the iPod touch for reporting automobile accidents. Nationwide’s official website is very user-friendly and full of information. Policy quotes may be obtained online. The website boasts a very high customer approval rating.

For automobile claims, Nationwide offers a Blue Ribbon Shop program. All repairs completed at one of the participating body shops are guaranteed both by the shop and by Nationwide. The guarantee lasts as long as the policy holder owns or leases the vehicle. Nationwide owns none of the shops in the Blue Ribbon Shop program.

Nationwide is very active in the national community. It partners with the American Red Cross, the United Way, Feeding America, and the Nationwide Children’s Hospital, among others. Nationwide also partners with VolunteerMatch, a national web-based nonprofit organization that will match volunteers with volunteer opportunities, making it easy for their associates who wish to give time and effort to organizations within their own communities. Each summer the company recognizes an employee volunteer of the year.

The company opened Nationwide Arena, home to the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets in 2000. It is also a proud sponsor of NASCAR driver Michael McDowell.

Whether you are an investor, or shopping around for an automobile insurance policy, this seems to be a company to keep your eye on. Before you make a final decision about which company to purchase a policy from, make sure to get a quote from Nationwide Insurance also. You could be pleasantly surprised.
