State Auto Insurance

The State Automobile Mutual Insurance Company (NASDAQ: STFC) was founded in 1921 by Robert Pein in response to Pein’s frustration with the current insurance market and claims handling as he saw it. Corporate headquarters remain in Columbus, where the company was founded, while regional headquarters are located in Austin TX, Baltimore MD, Columbus OH, Indianapolis IN and Nashville TN.

State Auto began by writing automobile insurance policies only. It did very well in Ohio, even though the state did not pass financial responsibility laws making insurance mandatory until 1935. By the mid-1930’s, the insurance company had expanded into other states and was offering homeowners and general liability coverages. It expanded into full-coverage policies for bicycles to help it get through World War II remaining financially sound. The company went public in 1991.

The company only utilizes independent insurance agents (more than 23000 of them) to sell their policies. Its insurance products include automobile, boat, farm, home and business. As relates to our website, we focused on the automobile policy. State Auto offers the typical coverages, as well as an attractive Auto Replacement Cost Coverage. This particular coverage will give the policy holder the replacement cost of their vehicle if it is determined to be a total loss or an un-recovered theft. This should often be more than actual cash value as vehicles depreciate so quickly.

In the event of an accident or loss, policyholders may report a claim 24/7 either by telephone or via the company website. The company website, www.state.auto.com, is user friendly and very informational. However, for premium quotes or to purchase a policy, a potential customer must contact an independent agent. One may be located via the company’s website tools.

The whole insurance group consists of: Beacon Lloyds, Beacon National, Farmers Casualty, Litchfield Mutual Fire, Meridian Security, Meridian Citizens Mutual, Patrons Mutual, State Auto Florida, State Automobile Mutual, State Auto National, State Auto Ohio, State Auto Property & Casualty, and State Auto Wisconsin.

The Group is currently rated A (excellent) by the A.M. Best Company, the leading global independent insurance industry auditor. It is one of the few insurance U.S. insurance companies to consistently maintain this ranking since Best began ranking companies in 1951. In 2006, Forbes named State Auto Financial the “Best Managed Insurance Company in America”.

This company is a civic-minded. Employees are granted a paid volunteer day. The company had a matching donation plan through the United Way, as well as the Jack C. Boyle Matching Gift Program (named after a late retiree from the company).
