Unigard Insurance

Unigard Insurance began in Oregon, USA in 1895 as the Oregon Fire Relief Association. It was then incorporated in 1901 as the Northwestern Mutual Fire Association. After a few more name changes, it became the Unigard Mutual Insurance Company in 1971, but became a share-holders company after being acquired by the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company in 1984. In 2007, the company was purchased by its current owner, the QBE Insurance Group (ASX QBE), one of the top 25 insurers and re-insurers worldwide. Unigard does business primarily on the west coast of the U.S.: Arizona, Indiana, Montana, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Utah and California. It is currently headquartered in Bellevue, Washington.

Unigard Insurance offers many products including insurance for individuals and business, loss control services and premium audit services. Since our website focuses on personal insurance claims, we reviewed only the insurance for individuals. This includes automobile insurance, boat, homeowners, rental and personal umbrella policies (PUPs).

Since insurance requirements are virtually the same throughout the U.S., Unigard’s personal automobile insurance policies include the usual offerings: collision, comprehensive (other than collision), rental, towing, and liability coverages. They also include coverages for custom parts or equipment. Unigard also has a very nice Road Service Hotline which provides emergency towing and other roadside assistance through the National Automobile Club. The service is free to their policy holders who have purchased towing coverage.

Unigard insurance policies must be purchased through an agent. Their official website does not offer online quotes. (It does however offer a lot of other useful information.) Unigard offers policy discounts: anti-theft equipment discounts, multi-vehicle discounts, good student discounts, and discounts for safe driving. They also offer policy holders the option to pay their premiums electronically.

Unigard offers convenient 24/7 claim or loss reporting availability to its customers. Claims may be reported through an agent or directly to the claims telephone line, 1-800-777-0788. The company does have a network of recommended shops it can recommend through their Quality Service Repair Program. As other insurance companies do, Unigard will back up the shop’s repair guarantees with one of their own.

Unigard is a civic-minded organization. The company and its employees volunteer both time and money to support many charitable organizations in the USA, including the March of Dimes, the Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, the Red Cross and the United Way.

Unigard is rated A (excellent) by A.M. Best and A+ by Standard and Poor’s. This is an excellent indicator of Unigard’s ability to meet its financial obligations, including payment of claims.

Whether you are an investor, or shopping around for an automobile insurance policy, this seems to be a company to keep your eye on. If you live within Unigard's market area, make sure to get a policy quote before you make a final decision about which company to purchase a policy from. You might be pleasantly surprised.
