Wawanesa Insurance, more properly known as The Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company, was founded in 1896 by Alonzo Kempton and Charles Kerr. The story goes that the idea of a company to provide low-cost coverage for local farmers was born over a jug of whisky on the Canadian prairie. With the help of 20 local prairie farmers who each invested $20 to finance the new company, the company opened to sell policies on Canadian farm equipment.
Today Wawanesa operates in both Canada and the USA. The parent company, Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company is rated an A+ (Superior) by the A.M. Best Company, the leading independent insurance industry assessor, while the California subsidiary is rated an A (Excellent). This is an indication of how financially sound, or able to pay claims, an insurance company is.
Wawanesa opened for business in the United States in 1974 with headquarters in San Diego, California. Wawanesa offers residential and automobile insurance policies to residents of California, and automobile insurance to residents of Oregon. The official website is very user friendly and gives customers the ability to request quotes, make policy changes, pay premiums online, and report claims or losses 24/7. Claims may also be reported by calling 1-800-427-9669 in California during normal work week hours.
Wawanesa’s automobile insurance program is directed towards better-than-average drivers. In order to obtain an automobile insurance policy, a driver cannot have more than one traffic violation or accident for which he or she was more than 50% at fault in the past three years. Because these requirements mean that Wawanesa’s policy holders are lower claim risks, the company is able to offer them rates that are generally lower than other insurers.
US policy discounts offered by this insurer include: multi-car discounts, good driver discounts, a discount for driver training course completion, and a discount for staying with the company for three or more years.
Whether you are an investor, or shopping around for an automobile insurance policy, this seems to be a company to keep your eye on. If you live within Wawanesa's market area, make sure to get a policy quote before you make a final decision about which company to purchase a policy from. You might be pleasantly surprised.
