Safeway Insurance: The Largest Family-Owned Insurer in the U.S.

The Safeway Insurance Group is one of the largest privately held, family-owned automobile insurance companies in the United States. Since it is a private company, it does not need to answer to shareholders whose primary (and sometimes sole) interest in business practices is focused on profits and the bottom line, rather than customer service and retention. Safeway touts that their privatization does in fact give their company an advantage in the customer service arena. Their company motto is “keeping promises”.

This company was established in 1959 by William Parrillo and is currently headquartered in Westmont, Illinois, a Chicago suburb. The company also has a regional office in every state that it does business in: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico and Texas. It also operates an affiliate in Florida: Safeway Property Insurance. This company is currently (as of October, 2010) rated an “A” for “Excellent” by the A.M. Best Company, the most recognized independent insurance industry analyst.

Safeway claims about 250,000 policy holders. The company actually employs less than 500 insurance professionals. Their private automobile and homeowners policies are sold by independent insurance agents. It is easy to find one of these insurance agents or “producers” on the company's very user-friendly official website. This company specializes in policies for drivers who may be considered higher than average claims risks (non-standard policies) and may find it difficult or too costly to purchase insurance elsewhere.

Thie company currently does not have 24/7 claims reporting availability, nor does it have an on-line claims reporting option. Accidents or losses must be called in to the company’s claim department. However, the claims department does have extended hours which include Saturdays and Sundays.

The Safeway Insurance Group is not affiliated with the well-known Safeway grocery stores located throughout the U.S. and western Canada.

Whether you are an investor, or shopping around for an automobile insurance policy, this seems to be a company to keep your eye on. Before you make a final decision about which company to purchase a policy from, make sure to get a quote from this one also, assuming that you reside within their small market area. The company offers many different policy discounts, and you might be pleasantly surprised.
