A Court-Approved Settlement is a Good Idea to Keep Parents From Stealing Their Kid's Settlement
by: Anonymous

The Court-approved settlement is a great safety measure to protect a child from having their settlement money used up by his/her parents before he/she sees a cent of it. When I was a child, my parents accepted a small check as a settlement after an uncle's dog bit my forehead. Now, thirty years later, I have never seen a cent of that settlement money (Mom just recently even "remembered" that they got some money from my uncle's insurance company), yet I still have a large scar on my forehead.

My Mom and Dad said that they didn't want to sue my Uncle and cause trouble in the family, but now I know that they just made an insurance claim for personal injury. That money never came out of my Uncle's pocket, and he had no reason to care whether I got more or not. My parents put my Uncle's feelings over mine, and now I either have to go through the pain and expense of having my scar fixed, or live with it for the rest of my life. Seeing some of that settlement money now (and honestly, I do not even know what the amount was) might help with the expense.
