What the National Insurance Crime Bureau Is

by K. Brennan

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) was created by the US insurance industry to deal with insurance fraud and insurance-related crimes. It has been in existence in one form or another for one hundred years. It is currently based in Des Plaines, Illinois but has offices nationwide. The organization works closely with law enforcement agencies and insurance company special investigative units. Current NICB membership is limited to insurance companies and the self-insured, but includes over a thousand commercial and personal property and casualty insurance companies, as well as parking service providers, rental car companies, and transportation-related organizations.

Most of the investigative tools and databases that the NICB offer focus around motor vehicle theft, including a vehicle identification number (VIN) data base available to members. This was the original focus of the organization. Today, it also provides tools to help combat damage and personal injury claim fraud, including task forces as well as research results and data and crime-trend analysis. The NICB also provides training to its members and its official website acts as a conduit to raise public awareness of the crime of insurance fraud. It is truly a valuable tool in the fight against insurance fraud.
